In today’s fast-paced world, everyone seems to be chasing success, but what does success really mean — to you? The answer varies from person to person just as snowflakes, diamonds, fingerprints, and DNA are all unique.

If you ask even just a handful of women in business what success means to them, you’ll get different answers. For some, success means financial freedom, while for others, it’s all about finding purpose and fulfilment in their lives. For me, it’s all of the above.

Defining success is not just about setting goals, it’s about creating a roadmap that leads you to a fulfilling and purposeful life. Without a clear definition, it’s easy to lose sight of your goals.

Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of simply saying “I want my business to be successful” or “I want to make six-figures per year” without defining what that means. What does a successful business look like?

A better question — What does a successful business look like exactly? And why six-figures? What will that get you? A lack of specifics is like going on a trip without knowing the destination.

1So, the first step to achieving what you really want is to define it specifically. Specificity accelerates success because you can make decisions quickly and avoid distractions.

Knowing what you want creates your entrepreneurial compass and decision-making filter so you can design your business to support it. When you know exactly where you’re going, you can ask yourself if your decisions and actions take you closer to or further away from your goals. Yes, it can be that simple.

To create a vivid vision of your dreams, you can start by asking yourself questions like:

  1. How do you envision your personal life in the next five years?
  2. What kind of career or professional achievements do you see yourself accomplishing?
  3. What are your goals for your physical and mental well-being?
  4. What kind of relationships do you want to nurture and develop?
  5. Where do you see yourself living or traveling to in the future?
  6. How do you imagine contributing to your community or society?
  7. What values and principles are important to you and how do you want to embody them?
  8. How do you picture your financial situation and what are your aspirations in that area?
  9. What would a day in your dream life be like from morning to night?
  10. What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
  11. How would you like to grow and evolve as a person?
  12. What experiences and adventures do you dream of having?
  13. What kind of impact do you want to make in the world?
  14. How do you see yourself making a difference in the lives of others?
  15. What steps can you take today to start moving towards your ideal future?

Write down your answers and revisit them often to remind yourself of what you’re working towards.

Having a crystal clear and detailed vision of success empowers you to live with purpose, make intentional choices, and create a fulfilling life aligned with your deepest desires and aspirations.

2 The list of questions above is not an exhaustive list. A great add on for each answer is to ask yourself — Why?

For example, if you’re answering the question — what kind of impact do you want to make in the world, apply the question “Why?” to your response.

Diving deeper allows you to infuse your values and beliefs into your definition of success ensuring that your pursuits are authentic, meaningful, and in alignment with who you are at your core.

This integration enhances your well-being, fosters personal growth, and allows you to make a positive impact in both your own life and the lives of others.

Take action now and start working towards your specific definition of success! And if you feel inspired, share yours in the comments.

The definition of success is being able to wake up every morning with a smile on your face, knowing that what you are about to do today is something that you love.
