Have you ever considered the strength of your network and the quality of relationships within it? It’s a concept known as social equity — the measure of standards and mutual value in your personal and business connections.

Lately, I’ve been delving into this topic with my clients, and let me tell you, it’s fascinating.

The key to social equity lies in mutual benefit. When your network is comprised of individuals who genuinely care about your success, just as you care about theirs, the advantages are boundless. Transitions become smoother as you easily gather support from various avenues.

These relationships possess remarkable qualities that set them apart: they are relevant, responsive, loyal, and caring. They take an interest in your expertise, engage with your communications, stick around as you grow and evolve, and genuinely appreciate your contributions. Isn’t that the kind of network we all strive for?

Building and nurturing a relevant, responsive, loyal, and caring network can make failure nearly impossible. Social equity becomes an insurance policy for your success (yes, read that again!).

However, it’s crucial to recognize that there are specific relationships essential for long-term, high-level achievements. And it’s the diversity within your network that casts the widest net.

Here are six types of relationships where you should invest time and effort to cultivate high social equity:

1 Family and Friends who “get” what you do: These are the friends who fuel your excitement rather than burst your bubble. They understand and support your plans and ideas, sparing you the disheartening looks of disbelief.

2 Mentors to inspire and elevate you to new heights of success: Mentors have accomplished what you aspire to achieve. Their guidance can be invaluable in your journey.

3 Coaches to teach, motivate, and keep you moving forward: A coach helps you navigate obstacles and provides the necessary push to continue growing.

4 Masterminds/Associations of like-minded individuals: Surround yourself with motivated people moving in the same direction. Connect, collaborate, commiserate, and celebrate together.

5 Complementary Experts: These are fellow business owners who cater to your target audience but in a complementary manner, rather than competing. Partnering with them opens doors to co-promotion, collaborations, referrals, and more.

6 Industry Experts to enhance your knowledge and expertise: Staying informed and innovative in your field requires learning from those at the forefront. Industry experts can provide invaluable insights and strengthen your professional skills.

As you cultivate these business relationships, strive to develop high social equity while embracing the essential element of mutual benefit.

Taking action is key to transforming knowledge into tangible results. Ready? Here’s how to leverage the power of social equity and strengthen your network:

Now, let’s take action and cultivate high social equity in your network. Follow these steps to strengthen your connections and embrace the power of social equity:

Step 1: Assess Your Current Network

Take a moment to evaluate your existing network of relationships. Consider the following questions:

  • Who are the individuals in your network that exhibit the qualities of relevance, responsiveness, loyalty, and care?
  • Are there any gaps in your network that need to be filled to create a more diverse and supportive community?
  • Are there any relationships that may require more attention or nurturing?

Step 2: Identify Key Relationship Types

Referencing the six relationship types mentioned in the blog post, identify which ones are already present in your network and which ones you need to focus on developing further. Consider the potential benefits each relationship type can bring to your personal and professional growth. Ask yourself:

  • Do I have supportive family and friends who “get” what I do and can provide encouragement and positive energy?
  • Have I connected with mentors who have achieved what I aspire to accomplish and can guide me on my journey?
  • Have I explored opportunities to work with coaches who can provide valuable insights and motivate me to overcome obstacles?
  • Am I actively participating in mastermind groups or professional associations that align with my goals and allow for networking and collaboration?
  • Have I established connections with complementary experts in my industry to explore partnership opportunities and referrals?
  • Am I staying informed and learning from industry experts through conferences, webinars, or online communities?

Step 3: Set Relationship-Building Goals

For each relationship type you identified in Step 2, set specific goals to enhance the social equity within your network. Consider the following goals:

  • Reach out to family and friends who “get” what you do, share your plans, and foster supportive conversations.
  • Seek out mentors who have achieved what you aspire to accomplish and initiate a mentorship or guidance arrangement.
  • Research and connect with coaches who can assist you in overcoming challenges and reaching new milestones.
  • Explore mastermind groups or professional associations aligned with your goals and actively engage in networking opportunities.
  • Identify complementary experts in your industry and initiate collaborations or partnership discussions.
  • Seek out industry experts through conferences, webinars, or online communities and actively learn from their insights.

Step 4: Create an Action Plan

Now, it’s time to put your goals into action. Start by creating a plan and timeline for each relationship type. Allocate specific time and resources to cultivate these connections. Take the following steps:

  • Schedule regular check-ins with family and friends, sharing your progress and supporting each other.
  • Research potential mentors and reach out to initiate mentorship arrangements or guidance discussions.
  • Identify coaches or coaching programs that align with your needs and take steps to engage with them.
  • Join relevant mastermind groups or professional associations and actively participate in networking activities and discussions.
  • Reach out to complementary experts, propose collaborations or partnership opportunities, and explore mutual benefits.
  • Attend industry conferences, webinars, or join online communities to connect with industry experts and expand your knowledge.

Step 5: Track Your Progress and Adapt

Regularly assess your progress in building high social equity within your network. Keep track of your achievements, challenges, and learnings. Adjust your approach if necessary and remain flexible in adapting to new opportunities that arise. Continuously ask yourself:

  • How am I progressing in strengthening my relationships and building social equity?
  • What achievements have I made in cultivating connections within my network?
  • What challenges have I encountered, and what have I learned from them?
  • How can I further adapt my strategies and approaches to enhance the social equity in my network?

By following these steps and actively investing in your relationships, you’ll create a strong network with high social equity that propels your personal and professional success.

Remember, relationships take time and effort to develop and nurture. By taking deliberate action and focusing on building social equity, you’ll create a network that provides unwavering support and propels your success.
